Don’t Blame Messenger Marion. But Blame Someone.
Marion Nestle is a hero. Actually, she is a Public Health Hero according to The Berkeley School of Public Health. I think she’s a hero to anyone concerned about food safety, USDA, BPAs, fast food, slow food, what we eat, what our kids eat or what our dogs eat.
With Marion, you’ve got someone with street cred:
- Time Magazine named her Twitter among its top 10 in health and science.
- Michael Pollan ranked her as the #2 most powerful foodie in America (after Michelle Obama).
- Mark Bittman ranked her #1 in his list of foodies to be thankful for.
I saw an article today on Marion’s Twitter feed called “What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You: The Hidden Costs of Antibiotics in Fast Food.” I’ve known for awhile that antibiotics have been used in our food supply and haven’t been happy about it. But this single infographic showed so many startling statistics that I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Chickens, pigs and cattle consume over 32 million pounds of antibiotics a year in this country (8 times the amount sold for human use)?! There are over 2 million antibiotic-resistant infections and at least 23,000 deaths every year?! When will this madness stop?
