If you value art as I do, I recommend watching the 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper and Mark Bradford, one of the most important and influential arts in America.
[My work] has value ’cause I think it has value and then if other people get on the Mark Bradford value train, great.
That was Mark Bradford’s response when Anderson Cooper asked if he worried about the vagaries in the art world and concept that art has value because people believe it has value.
I certainly wasn’t gonna wait on people to tell me my work has value. I’d probably still be waiting.
Bradford’s works sell for millions of dollars. His fans include Beyonce! Yet, he does not need outside validation to believe his work matters. As a writer, I can relate. If I’m happy with a post, I’m happy. Just don’t ask me if I’m happy – that’s for another post.
Though I haven’t reached the pinnacle of success (yet), like Bradford, my first goal is to please myself with my work. And if people want to get on the DeathbedFood train, great!
