Anthony Bourdain says that LA’s strip malls are where you find our best food. I disagree as I pointed out in my piece, “Anthony Bourdain Loves LA, Just Not Our Restaurants” – however, there is an exception to every rule and Chomp Eatery and Juice Station in Santa Monica is it.
I got invited in to try their Cinnamon Donut Fried Chicken Burger with Pumpkin Aioli, created for October which is National Pumpkin Month. The burger is DeathbedFood and Chomp has gotten a lot of press about it, including from The LA Times who recommends you assuage your guilty pleasure with a juice cleanse also offered at the store.
But now, let’s chow down on the Chomp burger in their gorgeous store, shall we?
It’s inspiring to learn how creative people like Rolan come up with ideas:
I thought the idea of pumpkin aioli was awesome so I started with that as a base. I thought about pumpkin and cinnamon spice which is often paired with it. That’s how I came up with the idea of a cinnamon donut. We use DK’s Donuts next door. I love sweet and savory. I thought about doing a regular burger with it but felt it would be too heavy so I went with chicken. Roscoe’s chicken and waffles is a classic sweet and savory classic so fried chicken it was.
I couldn’t decide which Fried Chicken Burger shot I liked best so I’m putting them all in here. What do you think shows off its DeathbedFood qualities best?
