My favorite Italian restaurant in Marin is Il Davide. I’m in good company as the restaurant was voted Best Italian Restaurant in Marin in the Independent Journal’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2021. To celebrate their win we decided to get a DeathbedFood dinner from them tonite.
First, I have to apologize to owner David Haydon. David, I’m sorry! I’ve called your restaurant “Ill David” for a long time only noticing recently that I’ve been wrong. But perhaps I don’t need to apologize because David may think that’s a good thing as he explains below:
My Italian Restaurant’s name is Il Davide, it is impossible to pronounce for 95 per cent of the people I meet. The difference a single vowel can make is incredible, because I know that if you take away that “e”, it would become a lot easier to pronounce.
The Restaurant’s name usually draws some sort of reaction from people. Sometimes I get a compliment, which I always appreciate. Every once in a while, I’ll get some sort of insult or joke. But usually, I will hear the person repeat our name improperly (Day-Vid, Dah-Veed, Dah-Vee-Day, etc). This is great for marketing. Who would of known!
(The correct pronunciation is “Dah-Vee-Deh.”)
For tonite’s blowout, we started with Caesar Salad and ended with Creme Brulee. In between my mom got Ravioli de Arrogosta (ravioli filled with Maine lobster and fennel pollen bottarga cream sauce). My honey got a custom pasta: angel hair with olive oil and garlic because Il Davide makes it a million times better than we can ever do at home. And I got what I always get: Linguini Alla Vongole (linguini with fresh Manilla clams and applewood smoked bacon in a white wine lemon cream sauce). That’s my dad’s all-time favorite pasta there and it has become mine as well.
One of the reasons I love writing about my food experiences is that it helps me remember them. That way I can go back anytime and salivate over the linguini with clams which is DeathbedFood.
An equally important reason is that I get to research the story. In this case, upon studying Il Davide’s website I learned that they share their incredible recipes like Butterscotch Pots de Creme that’s a dish like the Butterscotch Creme Brulee inspired me to start this blog in the first place!
I’m drooling looking at some of the favorite recipes: Bodino Con Torta di Ciliegia (tart cherry poached pear bread pudding), Polenta Con Gamberi e Pancetta (polenta with prawns and pancetta) and Cozze Alla Birra Con Gorgonzola (black mussels with garlic and gorgonzola).
I am definitely going to make some of these and will post them on the blog. Stay tuned.
Congratulations Il Davide on your win!!
Let me know if you’ve tried Il Davide and if you love it like I do!
