Like the OSCARS, some winners boggle the mind.
The Marin Independent Journal 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards came out today. As with any “Best Of” poll, you gotta wonder how some won and others were missed. Here’s my take on the ‘Best Restaurants’ category.
“Booooo! Flag on the play!!!”
Best Pizza, Meal: Creekside Pizza & Tap Room. Their pizzas are very high approaching $30. That price could be justified for the many years their ingredients and crust were top notch. Sadly, something’s changed recently. The last pizza we got was soggy and lackluster. Even worse is their chicken breasts that are like flying rubber (see my post; yes, Creekside was the restaurant referred to).
Best Bakery: Rustic Bakery. I love Rustic Bakery. Their chocolate banana croissant is DeathbedFood. But the hidden gem, and the BEST bakery in Marin, is Victoria Bakery in Greenbrae which I’ve written about three times: (1) Princess Cake; (2) Bombolinos; and (3) Torta de Nonna. All DeathbedFood!
Best Burger: Super Duper Burgers. I’ve never had a Super Duper burger. However, I don’t trust this rating as the readers gave an Honorable Mention to Phyllis’ Giant Burgers which I have (unfortunately) had. Phyllis gets tons of press and good ratings. Good for Phyllis. But her greasy in-an-icky-way burgers are not my jam. The BEST burger in Marin is at Iron Springs in Fairfax! This burger is so good that I recommend you have it neat, sans cheese.
Best Italian: Il Davide. Pronounced “Dah-veed-dah”, this restaurant serves up Linguini with Clams that’s DeathbedFood (see post). For this and many other dishes like their Ravioli with Lobster, Polenta with Prawns and Chocolate Ganache Tort, I say “Hell, yeah!”.
Best Restaurant in Greenbrae: JASON’s. This restaurant is a semi hidden gem. Semi as in they’ve gotten great reviews for a long time. Hidden as in they are the only restaurant in an office park and invisible from the street. Jason cooks up a comforting yet sophisticated menu. My favorite is his salmon with broad beans, fennel, crispy bacon, Del Cabo tomatoes and saffron broth. It’s a DeathbedFood dish.
Best Donuts: Johnny Doughnuts. Johnny’s motto is “It’s simple. Doughnuts are good.” Right there you know you’re in the right spot. I recommend the Bismarks which are filled with homemade jams and custards; Johnny calls these “the holy grail of doughnuts” which means they are DeathbedFood.
