LA Weekly Taking Nominations Now
The LA Weekly is taking nominations for its Best of LA Readers’ Choice Awards now through August 9. It’s an opportunity to nominate your favorite LA restaurants, shops, theaters, clubs, bars, spas and more. While I almost never ask my readers to do anything, I’m going to strongly recommend you nominate Okamoto Kitchen as the Best Food Truck.
A husband and wife team, their mission is to bring authentic, lesser known Japanese (comfort) food to America. What Roy Choi did for Korean Food Trucks, they’re aiming to do for the Japanese version.
They can do this because they are the real deal. Chef Chizuru is a first generation Japanese who graduated from Le Condon Bleu and studied under a master, Nobu Matsuhisa. Gerald has been passionate about Japanese culture since he was a child obsessed with anime and Japanese video games. He moved to Japan for a few years where he met Chizuru.
I’ve tasted the entire menu – all outstanding. However, my favorites are:
- Veggie Spice Tofu Rice Cake – ahi tuna tartare without the tuna.
- Croquette BCC (Bacon, Cheddar, Chives) – the best twice-baked potato EVER.
- Okamoto Curry – definitely not the Curry House variety.
- Sweets – the custard is DeathbedFood.
I nominated them. Will you? Find out who won in The LA Weekly’s Best of L.A. issue, on stands October 1.
Disclosure: I’m friends with the owners but can assure you that this piece is objective.
