What I Did For Summer Vacay: Union Square Cafe NYC
In honor of back-to-school time, I’m sharing several pieces for my “What I Did Over Summer Vacation” homework assignment. This Summer, I visited Maine and New York City. Maine was Part I. NYC is Part II.
Part II – Chapter 2 NYC: Brunch at Danny Meyer’s Union Square Cafe
At our North End Grill lunch, Chef Eric strongly recommended we visit Union Square Cafe where Danny Meyer’s restaurant empire began. Fortunately, the next morning we had just enough time to squeeze in brunch there before heading to JFK.
Because we had to make a flight, we ordered just the core elements: an appetizer, a main and a sweet. Mine were Heirloom Tomatoes, Eggs and a Coconut Bun. The Coconut Bun was DeathbedFood. There’s a reason the words “coconut custard” make my heart palpitate.
As with North End Grill, the best part of going to Union Square was being reminded that hospitality still exists in the hospitality business. I think every service-oriented business, inside or outside of the restaurant industry, should have its employees dine at one of Danny’s restaurants.
Union Square sent us off with a grocery bag filled with pastries, including the Coconut Bun. All I’ll say is that I had the sweetest NY-to-LA flight back home ever.
